With airframe formation in the Czech Republic, the design of a 35-year old American helicopter, a stabilizer made in Turkey, an updated engine design from Canada, and advanced avionics from France and assemble this all together in Pennsylvania: you now have a Sikorsky S-76D.
With new engines and cutting edge avionics added to a very popular airframe, the S-76D has sold more than 800 in the past 30 years. It’s one of the fastest twin-engine helicopters out there with a cruising speed of 155 knots. even with parts dating back to the 1970′s its streamlined and classic. The S-76D has been troubled with frequent set backs. The plan is now 4 years behind the initial Schedule.
So is the S-76D worth the delay? The quick answer, yes.
Sikorsky has been doing great at holding down costs, with a global supply chain. For around $10 million dollars, you can get a new S-76D with seating for 12.
The dual-Fadec Pratt & Whitney 210S engines generate 1,050 shaft horsepower. Full fuel distance is 375 nautical miles at 143 knotts. Duel speed main rotor blades are in place for quiet mode along with a new tail rotor. Created to be “interactive, intuitive, integrated, and safe”, the avionics package is incorporated into the hales Top Deck Suite. It possesses 4 six-by-eight-inch glass panel displays, with two cursors, so the pilot will never be far from obtaining what he needs.
With the cabin set up the interior has not been modified much, however is much quieter. It comes equipped with LED lighting, satphone, DVD and Blu-ray players, monitors, high end speakers, beverage drawers and snack nooks, along with high end veneers and plush leathers.
