Dolce & Gabbana Launch Luxury Men’s Watch Collection
Domenico Dolce opens up on a need to revisit family values expressed through a passion for generational timepieces.
The Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana, lead by a design duo that need no introduction, have launched their first luxury men’s watch collection and continue their focus on the luxury industry sector of their business.
The new watch collection launched in select Dolce & Gabbana boutiques a fortnight ago, with 52 models put into selection circulation at prices starting north of $2,513. The lead designers themselves have been pushing forward public relations across the world, offering classic insight into the couple’s mindset behind the new venture.
“To us a watch is an item to love, collect, pass down,” Domenico Dolce explained to The Guardian. “I love when people wear watches that once belonged to their grandfathers or fathers. I would love if this was the case with our watches in the future.” His long-standing creative partner Stefano Gabbana elaborated on Italian culture’s lack of distinction between family, food, love and sex as a means to promote happiness and the love for nice things.
Gabbana emphasized Dolce’s execution of a child-like passion finally put into execution was along the lines of taste without pretense or opulence. Gabbana would later explain in a separate interview that he felt watches were a category that had been conspicuously absent from the Dolce & Gabbana experience. Technically, the fashion house has been responsible for distributing mass-market watches through its D & G casual label, until the pair made the unusual decision to shut the label down altogether.
It is thought that their focus on contracting the collection to a luxury industry focus is in preparation to minimize risk and exposure during a time of turbulent tax-evasion trials being prepared against them back at home. Gabbana emphasized in an interview to WWD his feelings on selective distribution, insisting the interest was always ramped up over products that were “difficult to find”.
Whatever litigative future might be in store for the flagship house, they certainly will be beating any uncertainty with a positive mindset for style and uniqueness. Their new watch armoury will continue to consist of Swiss-made lines adorned with precious gem stones that will be sure to have aficionados knocking.
